Globus GridFTP is a tool for moving large, public dataset between large facilities.

Data is not encrypted when sent using GridFTP (encryption in flight is a high-assurance license feature). Data integrity at the destination is ensured by calculating checksums for every file

While it is possible to transfer data to and from a collection using a personal endpoint, this is not the intended use and other access methods are preferred.

GridFTP is not a service that is offered as part of RDM collections by default. This must be requested before a collection is enabled for use with GridFTP. You should consider the following before asking to enable a collection for GridFTP:

  • Is one of the following statements true?

  • This data is public

  • There are no consequences if there is third-party disclosure of this data

  • Is there a globus server endpoint at the remote site for your transfers?

  • Do you have more than 1TB of data?

  • Is your average file size larger than 100 MB?

If you have answered yes to all these questions, then your collection may be suitable for having GridFTP enabled. If so, please raise a support case with the RCC Service Desk (rcc-support@uq.edu.au) to start the process for getting the collection enabled.

Globus transfers can be enabled using the web app at https://app.globus.org/ or can be initiated with the command line client. Help for using either of these can be found at https://docs.globus.org/.
