RCC’s Core Infrastructure Support team won a University of Queensland Research Culture Award for "Leadership in Research Support and Management" on Wednesday, 2 October 2024.

The three-person team, comprising of Dr Marlies Hankel, Dr David Green and Dr Edan Scriven, supports more than 3,000 people across UQ and the local research sector to make the best use of the University’s cutting-edge supercomputers and eResearch infrastructure.

The "Leadership in Research Support and Management" award celebrates leaders who have shown exceptional dedication in providing research support, fostering innovation and collaboration, and enhancing the research community through strategic vision and best practices.

RCC Senior Developer and Consultation Manager Dr Marlies Hankel said the award “specifically recognises our work of deep diving into user problems and using our combination of research domain and HPC knowledge to solve them. The award is recognition of our work of providing consistent answers to users, be that via support tickets, notifications or constantly updating and revising our user guides.”

RCC Director Jake Carroll said Marlies', David’s and Edan’s research backgrounds mean they bring “incredible experience in specific domains of science” to their support roles.

“They help to enable UQ researchers, caring for their outcomes, research culture and the various and complex research domain needs. They bring care, diligence and focus to all those that need their assistance,” said Jake.

The UQ Research Culture Awards recognise outstanding contributions, achievements, and leadership that have significantly impacted the research landscape at the University.

The awards celebrate individuals and teams from the academic and professional sectors who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to areas such as research conduct, reproducibility, open research practices, innovation, collaboration, community engagement, and research career development.
