This year’s UQ-based Winter School in Mathematical and Computational Biology (4–8 July) has scored a bioinformatics legend as one of its keynote speakers.
Prof. Burkhard Rost, President of the International Society for Computational Biology since 2007 and Chair of Bioinformatics at the Technical University of Munich, will deliver a talk on 5 July at the Winter School on bioinformatics methods, models and applications to disease.
His particular research interest is predicting protein interactions and the effects of changing individual amino acids, with the goal of fostering a better understanding of how proteins, genes and cells work.
Other international keynote speakers at the Winter School include:
- Prof. Edward DeLong, University of Hawaii
- Prof. Howard Ochman, University of Texas
- Dr Mathieu Bourgey, McGill University, Canada.
Dr Nick Hamilton, who works across RCC, IMB and QCIF, said of the Winter School, which he organises: “It’s now been running for 13 years, and it’s great to see the students and researchers coming back again and again, particularly from the biological sciences. It speaks to the strength of the international and national speakers and the constantly evolving program presenting the cutting edge each year in bioinformatics in a format suitable to both experts and those new to the field.
"As well as Prof. Rost, we are particularly pleased that one of the founders of the field of metagenomics, Prof. Ed DeLong, has chosen to join us this year,” said Dr Hamilton.
