UQ advanced computing specialist Jake Carroll has joined RCC as Chief Technology Officer.

The move comes after many years of collaboration between Jake and RCC staff.

Jake was previously UQ’s Associate Director, Institutes Research Computing, working across the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN).

He has worked in senior IT management positions within UQ for the last ten years.

As CTO, Jake will examine UQ’s short and long-term research computing needs and help RCC develop its strategy.

RCC Director Prof. David Abramson is delighted Jake has joined the team.

“Jake joins RCC with a huge reputation and skills and will make a significant contribution. His technical prowess is unrivaled, but he also has substantial skills in managing research IT innovation. By continuing a role in three Institutes, he will serve as a critical link between RCC and some of the University’s heaviest research computing users.”

Jake said his new role would provide UQ researchers with a “strong point of advocacy at the big table.”

“My role will be an avenue for researchers to bubble up their interests, ideas and the ‘what if?’ that sometimes never makes it out of the lab or the coalface of research. I will be a person close to their science who will (attempt to) make sure their experience with technology is as frictionless as possible, where possible, and a person who provides real value back to the thing we're all here for—research.”

Jake said his change in roles is a natural progression given UQ’s now shared approach to tackling the largest technological issues research presents.

“This role is right for me and right for UQ at this present moment. It fits with my knowledge of the industry and my deep care for both research outcomes and boundary-pushing technological management.”

As RCC’s CTO, Jake will retain a senior appointment with each of UQ’s research institutes. He will remain a point of contact for researchers and executive management for strategy and guidance in each institute.
