Tech Talk: Scientific Workflow Systems
Scientific Workflow Systems is the topic of the November national Tech Talk on Friday, 3 November, 2pm–4pm AEST (3pm–5pm AEDT).
A scientific workflow composes of multiple computational steps to access and process data and often runs on distributed computing platforms. Scientific workflow systems make it easy for researchers to create and execute their own workflows, share a workflow with their collaborators, and track provenance of a workflow execution results.
Speakers:
- Dr Andreas Moll (Senior Scientific Software Engineer, Australian Synchrotron): Lightflow — A lightweight, distributed workflow system
- Andreas is the leader of the software engineering team at the Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne. His and his team’s work comprises the development of experiment control systems, scientific software, data pipelines and data management tools. Before being allowed to spend his days writing Python code and learning about microservices, he had to go through a six-year Fortran and C++ bootcamp in his PhD.
- Dr Siddeswara Guru (Data Science Director, TERN): Kepler scientific workflow and its applications
- Siddeswara Guru is a Data Science Director for the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN). He initiates, coordinates and manages ecological data, e-infrastructure and synthesis projects apart from overseeing the data and information management activities across TERN.
- Assoc. Prof. Steve Cassidy (Macquarie University): Adapting Galaxy for language processing
- Steve Cassidy is a computer scientist and has worked in various areas relating to speech and language technology over the last 30 years after completing a PhD in Cognitive Science.
If this Tech Talk is of interest to you (or you just want to hang out with some other research data folk!) then come along to one of the live-linked venues around Australia. QCIF is the host of the two Queensland hubs at UQ St Lucia and USQ Toowoomba. The UQ venue is RCC's videconferencing/seminar room in the Axon Building (47).
The talks, from 2pm–3pm AEST, are followed by networking and discussion at the seven Tech Talk hub locations around Australia. All are welcome to join this informal event, either in person or virtually online. Please register (it's free) for catering purposes. More information | please register.
The monthly Tech Talk is an initative of ANDS, Nectar, and RDS, including nodes QCIF, Intersect, VICNode, eRSA and Pawsey.
