In sad news, our RCC colleague Ryurick Hristev passed away suddenly last week, aged 54.

Ryurick had been on extended leave since March this year to fight cancer, but even so, his sudden passing was a surprise to us all. It is believed he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism, which is an increased risk in cancer.

Born in Bucharest, Romania, Ryurick first joined UQ from New Zealand’s University of Canterbury in 2004 as part of UQ’s ITS team. He then joined RCC at its inception in 2013 as a systems administrator, Linux and Windows specialist, and as a key member of the RCC Support Desk. If you ever asked the RCC Support Desk for help, chances are it was Ryurick who assisted you.

“Ryurick was a quiet and hard-working member of our team, and made a huge contribution to the effective operation of RCC,” said RCC Director Prof. David Abramson.

“We will miss him greatly. Somehow our fortnightly team meetings where he would routinely report that he had been doing “stuff” and handling [Support Desk] “tickets", won’t be the same. We all know that the “stuff’ and the "tickets” kept our machines running and helped our researchers achieve their goals.”

Ryurick’s funeral was held Thursday, 19 July.
