Irek Porebski has joined RCC as a Principal IT Systems Administrator to work on data storage, automation, supercomputers and networking.
Irek has worked in research computing at The University of Queensland for more than 15 years, previously with the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) and the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB). He has collaborated closely with RCC since its creation in 2011.
Beyond his UQ roles, Irek has also worked as a Systems Engineer for both Telstra and CSIRO.
RCC Director Jake Carroll said Irek will be an “absolute asset” to RCC's operational, architectural and researcher support capabilities.
“Irek brings to RCC amazing skills, connections, an indomitable will for solving problems and a strong sense of duty to our researchers,” said Jake.
"He has been a constant and strong pillar of capability in the UQ research institutes, and his history is a thing of ‘firsts’. He was the systems administrator responsible for UQ's very first accelerated supercomputer (Wiener) and the maintainer of RCC's first experimental MeDiCI [data fabric and storage] cache.
"It will become quickly obvious that Irek's place at RCC will benefit all researchers at UQ who need our capabilities and support, as he applies his skills, discipline and knowledge to the broadest range of problems."
As well as continuing to maintain MeDiCI, Irek will also support UQ supercomputers Bunya and Wiener.
“In my RCC role, I am looking forward to working with a great team of specialists in the research computing field and having opportunities to work with cutting-edge technologies,” said Irek.
In his spare time, Irek, who is originally from Poland, likes to cook delicious food and train his German Shepard dog.
RCC warmly welcomes Irek to the team.
