RCC staff present at QUT “BioeconOMICS” workshop

13 Dec 2017
Dr Jeff Christiansen

Two RCC staff gave talks at a QUT “BioeconOMICS” workshop on Thursday, 30 November.

Dr Igor Makunin presented the Genomics Virtual Lab and services maintained by RCC’s GVL-Qld team, such as Galaxy-qldGVL RStudio server, RDS Life Sciences (Genomics) Project Beacon Tutorial server, and a complete mirror of datasets from the 1000 Genomes project.

Dr Jeff Christiansen, of RCC and QCIF, spoke about omics.data.edu.au, a platform consisting of cloud-based data services and tools for Australian researchers so they can combine genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabolomic data, and then analyse and interpret these data.

The ‘omics suffix is commonly used in the biological sciences to describe endeavours undertaken to characterise and quantify an area of study to its most complete state. Genomics is perhaps the most well-known of these to date, but other ‘omics disciplines include proteomics, metabolomics and environomics.

The workshop’s aim was to showcase QUT's capabilities in ‘omics-related research in the bioeconomy sector, and to hear from experts in the field.
