Pierre-Alain Chaumeil has moved from UQ’s Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE) to join RCC as a Senior Software Developer.

The move coincides with RCC taking responsibility for development work on the Genome Taxonomy Database (GTDB),  an initiative to establish a standardised microbial taxonomy based on genome phylogeny.

“Since Pierre was the person doing that work at ACE, he has moved to RCC. For the foreseeable future he has joined our team to work on this project. We are delighted to welcome him to our team,’ said RCC Director Professor David Abramson.

As a Senior Software Developer at ACE for more than five years, Pierre played a key role in the creation of the GTDB.

He was also Instrumental in the launch of the Microba systems and websites, which focus on gut microbiome analysis.

“I have an interest in helping research groups to access the best possible IT infrastructure that will help unlock the full potential of their research,” said Pierre.

Prior to joining ACE, Pierre, who has a bioinformatics background, worked at QFAB Bioinformatics (now QCIF Bioinformatics) for more than six years as a Software Developer based at UQ. In this role, he worked with multiple UQ research groups in life sciences to help them develop multi-user software applications.

While at QFAB, Pierre also worked with the team behind the Genomics Virtual Laboratory, which included RCC staff.

Overall, Pierre has more than 11 years’ experience in software development at UQ, which has given him a thorough knowledge of researchers’ requirements in software as well as a strong background in phylogenetic inference and comparative genomics.

He received his BSc in Biology and his Masters in Bioinformatics from the University of Bordeaux in France. His Masters was combined with an internship at UQ’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB).
