Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith and Mark Endrei have joined RCC to help with specific projects.

Kevin will spend four months with RCC to enhance UQ researchers' engagement with the new data-intensive HPC FlashLite. He is a mathematician/computer scientist. His experience with high performance computing includes:

  • 10 years applying massively parallel computing to a wide range of areas at Queen Mary University of London, including:
    • Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) simulations
    • speech processing, and
    • medical image processing
  • setting up Australia's first massively parallel computing facility at CSIRO in 1990
  • setting up the joint ANU-CSIRO Virtual Environments Lab in 1997 that pioneered interactive hapto-visual systems in Australia
  • establishing the iVEC HPC and visualisation centre (now the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre) in Western Australia in 2001.

UQ researchers who want to know if FlashLite is suitable for their research can contact Kevin via email: kevin.smith@uq.edu.au.

Mark has joined RCC as a systems administrator/programmer part-time at one day per week while he studies as a full-time UQ ITEE PhD student.

He is working with RCC Director Prof David Abramson on an ARC Linkage funded project with Cray Inc, one of the world's most respected supercomputing vendors. Mark will be researching software methods to improve the energy efficiency of high performance computers.
