RCC’s Marco Fahmi has become the new project manager of the Humanities and Social Sciences Data Enhanced Virtual Laboratory (HASS DEVL) and its Tinker digital platform.

Marco, RCC’s manager of its digital HASS program, will work with QCIF, the new lead agent of the HASS DEVL, and the HASS DEVL’s partners, including UQ, Griffith, AURINAustralian Data Archivethe National Library of Australia and the University of Melbourne.

Produced as part of a Data Enhanced Virtual Laboratory (DEVL) project funded by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), the Tinker platform provides a gateway to an ecosystem of data, tools and services.

The project aims to capitalise on its existing online presence to encourage HASS researchers to experiment with technology (hence the platform name “Tinker”) as a way to build skills and give confidence to those using digital tools and methods.

This year, QCIF has taken over from eRSA (eResearch South Australia) as the lead agent of the HASS DEVL project since eRSA is due to be disestablished in 2019.

“eRSA did a great job in delivering the Tinker Studio, the Data Curation Framework, the HASS Champions program and the popular DH [Digital HASS] Pathways events. On behalf of the steering committee and project partners, we thank them and bid them farewell,” said HASS DEVL Steering Committee Chair Richard Maltby.

“We are proud of the project's achievements so far and we look forward to working with the Queensland institutions and the University of Melbourne, and a bright future for HASS DEVL and the Australian digital HASS research community.”

HASS DEVL is composed of two nodes: a Queensland node (the Queensland Digital HASS Network — a collaboration between UQ, Griffith and QUT) that will carry out technology development, training and skills development, communications and contribute to a future vision for digital HASS research; and a Victorian node (based at the University of Melbourne) that will deliver a Data Curation Framework and community engagement activities including the HASS Champions program.

A national training program for Tinker users will be announced in the coming months.

Tinker e-newsletters, once published by eRSA, will now be issued by the Queensland node. So, if you would like to keep up with changes and continue to receive the Tinker e-newsletter, we invite you to click on the link below.
