UQ students Edward Davis and Aviral Kailash Jain have reported on their internship earlier this year at the US National Centre for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), located at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Edward used deep learning to analyse gravitational wave data from America’s LIGO detectors and Aviral worked on a machine learning system to help with human activity recognition, specifically, to detect falls.

Edward is currently in his Honours year for his Bachelor of Mathematics, majoring in statistics and computer science. Aviral is a fourth-year undergraduate software engineering and mathematics student.

The internships were part of the RCC-sponsored Queensland Undergraduate Research Projects Abroad (QURPA) program.
