UQ has received a merit award at this year’s Queensland iAwards in the category ‘Infrastructure & Platforms Innovation of the Year’.

RCC Director Prof. David Abramson personally received the certificate at the state gala in Brisbane on Wednesday, 7 June.

UQ received the award for significant innovations around data-intensive infrastructure, in particular the FlashLite high performance computer and the Metropolitan Data Caching Infrastructure (MeDiCI), a high performance storage fabric. Together these systems provide unprecedented ability to store and process large amounts of research data, involving computers and instruments on campus, and computers and storage off-site.

MeDiCI delivers ultra-fast multi-site data access on demand without user involvement, saving researchers valuable time to focus on their work.

FlashLite, the RCC-designed specialist high performance computer for data-intensive science, has a novel storage and processing hierarchy that includes large amounts of main memory and solid-state disk (flash memory).

The Australian Information Industry Association hosts the iAwards annually, with state awards preceding a national final. Receiving a merit award puts UQ and RCC in the running for a national iAward, announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday, 30 August.

The iAwards recognise and reward technology innovations that have the potential to, or are already having, a positive impact. iAwards submissions are accepted from innovators across the whole Australian economy, including individuals, groups, government or private organisations.
