RCC Director Prof David Abramson has become a Visiting Professor for a period of three years in Oxford University’s e-Research Centre (OeRC).

The University announced the conferment at the end of February and said it was “in recognition of the contribution [David] will make to teaching and research in the e-Research Centre and elsewhere in the division.”

David said, “It is great to be associated with one of the world’s leading eResearch centres. The UK pretty much invented e-Science, and OeRC has been in a leadership position for a long time.”

The appointment “formalises the reality” as David has been visiting Oxford for a few weeks each year for some time, and OeRC Director Prof Dave De Roure is on RCC’s External Steering Committee.

“The title is less about research and more about exploiting synergies between OeRC and RCC,” said David Abramson. “It will provide a tighter link and a mechanism to leverage and share technology developed either at UQ or OeRC.

“Both centres have similar goals and aspirations, although they have very different implementations. The UK and Australian environment for funding eResearch is quite different, and this will allow us to exploit local opportunities whilst sharing thinking on how to support research.

“We will also collaborate on eResearch projects of mutual interest. We share a common interest in the application of high performance computing, and I have collaborated with Oxford’s cardiac research group for some years on HPC. This title will allow this to continue.”

David’s first trip to Oxford as a Visiting Professor is likely to be in August this year.
