Improvements made to UQRDM cloud service

The UQ Research Data Manager (UQRDM) platform now offers a quicker, better cloud service for convenient linking, collaboration and sync-and-share for research data.  

After feedback from UQ researchers about the lack of synchronisation performance between the UQRDM cloud and regular filesystem access, Leslie Elliot from UQ ITS implemented integrations of the cloud.rdm interface to resolve the issue. 

As a result, synchronisation times for files have become substantially lower. In some cases, where researchers were previously waiting more than 24 hours, their files appear in the cloud.rdm interface within an hour.  

In order to solve the problem end to end, RCC and ITS worked with IBM on a coordinated set of upgrades to the entire storage software platform UQ-wide to make the synchronisation process more efficient.  

RCC Director Professor David Abramson said: “This work is a good example of practical outcomes from the IBM@UQ Centre of Excellence and Innovation. 

RCC Chief Technology Officer Jake Carroll said: “Until recently, synchronisation between UQRDM Q collections and cloud.rdm had been inefficient for the research data-intensive community wanting to use both UQRDM Q collections and the sharing functions of the UQRDM cloud tools.  

“We’re pleased to see this improvement to the service. It will enhance the user experience significantly.” 

The UQRDM cloud tools enable researchers to synchronise, share and collaborate with other users nationally and even internationally.
