Applied Machine Learning in Research Showcase
An Australian Applied Machine Learning in Research Showcase will take place online on Thursday, 24 June, 2pm–4pm, and is open to all.
The event will bring together machine learning practitioners to give short, 10–15 minute talks about their experiences, including how they got started; techniques used; what challenges they faced, and how they overcame them; research outcomes and general observations.
The showcase is a collaboration between UQ, QCIF, Monash University, ARDC, NCI, and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.
The new Machine Learning Community of Practice for Australia (ML CoP), including RCC Senior Machine Learning Consultant Dr Nick Hamilton, is organising the showcase.
“Machine learning is now touching multiple fields across the sciences and humanities, with new applications being discovered on a daily basis,” said Dr Nick. “This [showcase] is a great opportunity to come and learn from, talk to, and ask questions of researchers developing some of these exciting new applications.
“We aim for it to be highly interactive with much discussion from the attendees, be they just beginning in machine learning or advanced users, and with opportunities to talk about the current challenges.”
The showcase’s primary purpose is to identify common opportunities, gaps and challenges in applying machine learning that can be resolved collaboratively through the ML CoP.
The event also aims to connect researchers and other machine learning practitioners with specialists, such as in high-performance computing and training.
The ML CoP will run similar showcase events and talks on 5 August and 9 September, with a symposium on 11 October.
The ML CoP, and associated portal ML4AU, is an initiative of an ARDC-funded project aiming to create environments to accelerate machine learning-based discovery. UQ is a co-investment partner of the project alongside Monash, NCI, Pawsey and QCIF.
Registration is open for the Applied Machine Learning in Research Showcase on 24 June.
